A Culture of Empathy
My philosophy about teaching is student centered. I believe that the goal of teaching is learning and to be able to do this, I need to focus on the individual needs of my students. I want to be able to connect with their interests and what they love so as to give them the opportunity to desire to learn. A culture of apathy is not something I want to foster in my classroom.
In order to avoid a culture of apathy, I want to be able to work on forming the whole person. English class is more than teaching the standards for a grade. Rather, I want to be able to teach literature that allows students to study the human condition in order to help them grow socially, morally, and emotionally. By teaching literature, students will be able to not only grow on those levels but will also gain other skills such as a wide range of vocabulary and knowledge of the world outside of their experience.
I hope that as an educator, I will be able to connect with my students and their interests and create a culture of empathy by teaching literature that helps to form the whole person. I hope that my students can become passionate about learning through their time in my classroom and then take that passion for learning and apply it to everything they do in the future.
